Cooking habits can help fight malnutrition - Bangladesh

As seen in the Starved for Attention film Terrifying Normalcy, Bangladesh is one of the world’s malnutrition hotspots.

To help prevent children becoming malnourished, MSF staff give cooking classes in people’s homes, teaching mothers about the importance of food hygiene and nutrition. During these sessions, women learn new ways of preparing khichuri—a local dish containing rice, lentils and vegetables—so that nutrients are not lost in the cooking process.

At the moment, the U.S. provides half of the world’s food aid, but the quality of this food aid doesn’t meet the nutritional requirements of children under 2 years of age. So aid is wasted as it doesn’t prevent nor treat malnutrition.

Reuters AlertNet - Top donors accused of sending ‘substandard’ food to poor

Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) “said the world’s biggest donors of food aid — including the U.S., Canada, Japan and the European Union — continued to supply and fund nutritionally ‘substandard’ food to developing countries, despite scientific evidence showing it was of little value in reducing child malnutrition.”

Lovely.

India: Invisible

Photojournalist Stephanie Sinclair turned her lens on an MSF program in Bihar State which treats children at the epicenter of one of the world’s malnutrition hotspots. These children descend from generations of a chronically under-nourished population, making malnutrition more difficult for MSF workers to spot. Malnutrition in India is so pervasive it is almost invisible.
